Family Caregiving, Get Organized, Avoid Scams

24 Nov

This is a great article courtesy of AARP about getting family documents organized.

‘Your loved ones aren’t getting any younger, and the economy isn’t getting any better. The two trends might have something in common, and that’s why it is so important to help your family members organize their important financial documents, to learn more about their financial resources, and to help protect them against scams. What should you do to ensure the safety of your loved ones’ financial security?

Get Organized
First, you’ve got to know what they’ve got. But where to start? I can’t tell you how many adult children approach me and ask, “How can I possibly ask Mom and Dad about their finances without stirring up a hornet’s nest?” And it is true; this family conversation is often the most difficult one. It is also, however, often the most important one.’

FAMILY ALLIANCE CELEBRATES HALLOWEEN!!!!

28 Oct

WOODSTOCK – Family Alliance clients enjoy celebrating Halloween in ways that they may not do if they were alone in their homes.  Creating scarecrows, pumpkin decorating, and a best costume contest are only a few of the ways the mature adults celebrate.  “It gives the clients a chance to share their own traditions and cultures with others.  It also provides an opportunity to laugh, and be creative, instead of sitting at home watching television,” says Erica Hannett, a Certified Nurses Aide at Family Alliance, Inc.

Active adults can celebrate Halloween with peers through numerous Halloween games offered all week prior to the holiday.   Participants are already thinking about and creating their Halloween costumes in preparation for the Halloween Party, to be held at Family Alliance on Friday, October 29.  The pumpkins will be judged for best decorated pumpkin.  Staff and clients both participate in the Best Costume contest, an annual favorite of staff.   Regarding all the festivities, Hannett says about the clients, “It reminds them that they don’t have to be so serious all the time.  They can let loose and be uninhibited with their peers.”

Family Alliance is a not-for-profit organization founded 29 years ago as a program enabling mature adults to remain at home and active in their community.  Programs include: Wellness Day Programs and Dementia Day Programs with door-to-door transportation, Recovery/Mental Health Services, Counseling and Community Support. The Charlie Rose Brain Series explores one of sciences final frontiers, the study of the human brain.

Over the next year Charlie will interview the most knowledgeable scientists and researchers in hopes of illuminating a new topic of study. Each monthly episode will examine different subjects of the brain, including perception, social interaction, aging and creativity.

We will also look at scientific discovery and advances in technology, in the hope that someday terrible illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s will be history.
